A number of the early appendix and permanent mares deserve mention. Most of the appendix and early permanent mares where daughters of Johnie or Stardust and out of mares descending from the Lafferty Lakota band or Robinson thoroughbreds. Many of the appendix mares where part of the ONO ranch relay race string in the 1930s and 1940s. The ONO mares were well known for their speed and style on the track. In a July 25, 1987 article honoring Albert Lopez, Annabelle Lopez Mortenson remembered a 1940 rodeo at Timberlake, South Dakota. “ Ancel Tibbs (brother of Casey Tibbs) was riding Albert Lopez’s horses in the relay race. Lucille French rode horses belonging to Glen French. She was the only female rider entered, which impressed everyone, especially Annabelle, who remembers the fellows shaking their heads and saying what good looking horses those French horses
were but thinking that the little gal surely could never
out-ride those big stout men. ”

Annabelle continues, “ The relay race was one of the roughest
and toughest events in the rodeo. The horses and riders lined up at the starting line with the saddle on the ground next to the horse they were to start with. When the starting shot was fired the horse was saddled and running before the rider even hit the saddle. Each rider had three horses to ride and two or three helpers to hold the horses. Many of the riders just took one
wrap with their latigo and held the end in their hand so that when they finished the first lap they would give a yank and the saddle would come flying off. Saddling the second horse could be hard because there were so many horses and riders coming and
going in a small area that is was hard to control the horses and keep from getting run over. Lucille French had taken a bad spill when she got off her second horse, but came in right
behind Ancel. Tibbs failed to unsaddle his horse at the
end of the race which gave Lucille the win. ”

Researching his August 1947 article for the American Ag News, feature writer Rod Kreger visited the ONO ranch. He interviewed Glen L. French and 12 year old John about ONO ranches’ relay race horses. Glen stated that “ he runs about 50 head of horses and his relay string numbers 14 head. They receive specialized training to stay calm during the excitement of the races.” Glen went on to say that “ he competes at 6 or 7 rodeos each summer and he wins an average of three hundred dollars per race.”

ONOs Mischief, appendix, was foaled in 1938 and sired by an unknown remount stallion. She was a gift to Lucille French from T.O. Traversie in 1939. ONOs Mischief lived to be over 30 years old and foaled every year from the age of three. She was the dam of several “good runners” (as Nora called the relay horses) before she had AQHA foals. She was the dam of Patch and Snooper both part of the relay string. They were sired by Topper who was run in Sulkey races. Snooper was the fastest of the relay string and was always used as the last horse in the race. Topper was eventually sold to Dr. Arlo Nansel of Miles City, Montana who owned him for a number of years. ONO Mischief’s registered foals include Sioux Bee, a Peter Harmon daughter.
